Whetting the Appetite

28 08 2008

Dramatic scenes from classic Westerns. Polished hyperbole across pages of written accounts. Images of two people who may, or may not, have been what legend has made them into.

Those are the kind of things that historians must contend with when researching and writing about Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, two of the most legendary Wild West characters in history.

Check out the short video at www.sdshspress.com for the new book Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane: Deadwood Legends. How much do you think you know about these two? Is any of it true?

Platte County Record Times article

25 08 2008

A short article about Along the Grapevine Trail appeared in a recent edition of the Platte County Record Times of Wheatland, Wyoming. The article provides a bit more background information about author Starley Talbott and the reasons she wanted to write this book.

A wonderful typo appears towards the end of the article, but I won’t spoil it, I’ll just let you find it for yourself!

Annie from the Prairie-Dog Prince

The third prairie tale is at the printer. That means that all of our books for 2008 are either in the printing process or on their way to us from the printer.

The Prairie-Dog Prince looks fantastic and we can’t wait to see the finished book. There are some wonderful posters being printed for the book as well, so if you are a librarian, bookstore owner, or teacher, and would like a poster or two to display, just email the Press and let us know.

Tourism in the Black Hills
Seth Bullock
the 4th Prairie Tale

Populism

Nothing is set in stone yet, but it gives you an idea of the kind of thing we are working on.

They are on the trucks and heading this way.

We’re expecting Waiting for Coyote’s Call and The Mystery of the Tree Rings to arrive this week from the printers. As always, we’re excited to see the finished books, and to ship them off to their new homes, wherever that may be.

Following the signing of a new distribution deal with a company in the United Kingdom last week, we’re hoping that some of these books will find their way across the pond as well.
