Attending the BookExpo America in Los Angeles last week (more about this in another post to come soon), we put on our suits and dresses, walked up the red carpet, and settled in for two nights of awards ceremonies.
OK, so they weren’t exactly gala affairs with the press attending and speeches about what designer we were all wearing, but awards are awards, and it is always nice to be recognised by your peers for the good books we are publishing.
At the Benjamin Franklin Awards on Thursday night, Cowboy Life stood poised for a gold medal in the biographies and memoirs category. As the MC arrived at this award, nervous little butterflies hovered, Oscar-like music accompanied in the background, and a hush fell over the room . . . but it was not to be. Gold went elsewhere, but a respectable finalist medal is most welcome.
The Sioux in South Dakota History and The Mystery of the Round Rocks had already been granted bronze medals in the IPPY awards presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association, but the ceremony was still to be attended, and we were not about to miss the chance to see Los Angeles from the 54th floor of the Wells Fargo building in the rather fancy City Club on Bunker Hill. What a view! We picked up the medals and headed to the food.
The Press would like to thank both sets of judges for deeming our books worthy of such high recognition and also to congratulate all the authors and editors of these books.
