The office is a buzz of activity!
Actually, it really isn’t, at least in terms of noise. In fact, we are all so consumed with our various projects right now that there is barely a peep from anyone.
We’re wrapping up the end of the 2008 list as books fly off to design, to print, and to the bookshelves. We have tentative delivery dates for two books, late July and early August, for Along the Grapevine Trail and The Mystery of the Tree Rings, and all but one of our books have left editing for the greener pastures of design and print.
Still, we’re not shirking our responsibilities. Work has begun on next year’s list, marketing and promotions continue for all our books, and reading manuscripts (yes, we get to read books as part of our job–great isn’t it) carries on as always.
Keep an eye out on these pages and our main website for all details regarding new books. There will be an excerpt from Along the Grapevine Trail on www.sdshspress.com by the beginning of next week, so visit us there and download the pdf file.
what’s next?

Books on Facebook
4 06 2008
We’re going 2.0 at the Press.
Check out our books at Facebook.com. Slowly but surely we’ll be adding Facebook pages for our books and authors. Just type in the name of one of our books, Along the Grapevine Trail has a page already, and see what there is!! The pages will feature pictures, excerpts, interviews, even videos eventually, so stop by and join as a friend or a fan. We’ll also try and develop some stimulating conversations and try and get the authors involved where we can as well.

Red carpets, gala events, awards, medals
4 06 2008

Attending the BookExpo America in Los Angeles last week (more about this in another post to come soon), we put on our suits and dresses, walked up the red carpet, and settled in for two nights of awards ceremonies.
OK, so they weren’t exactly gala affairs with the press attending and speeches about what designer we were all wearing, but awards are awards, and it is always nice to be recognised by your peers for the good books we are publishing.
At the Benjamin Franklin Awards on Thursday night, Cowboy Life stood poised for a gold medal in the biographies and memoirs category. As the MC arrived at this award, nervous little butterflies hovered, Oscar-like music accompanied in the background, and a hush fell over the room . . . but it was not to be. Gold went elsewhere, but a respectable finalist medal is most welcome.
The Sioux in South Dakota History and The Mystery of the Round Rocks had already been granted bronze medals in the IPPY awards presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association, but the ceremony was still to be attended, and we were not about to miss the chance to see Los Angeles from the 54th floor of the Wells Fargo building in the rather fancy City Club on Bunker Hill. What a view! We picked up the medals and headed to the food.
The Press would like to thank both sets of judges for deeming our books worthy of such high recognition and also to congratulate all the authors and editors of these books.
